Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-3-386
Version: 2.6.8-16sarge6
In short:
After today executing an "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" on my stable
Debian 3.1 Sarge, my server does not properly reboot when given any kind of
reboot command through SSH. Rebooting from a locally connected terminal
(attached keyboard/screen) works fine. I have determined this problem to be
kernel-specific, apparantly occurring only when using the kernel from this
package. My server is based on a Jetway J7F4K Series motherboard, using a VIA
CN700 chipset.
In long:
After today executing an "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" on my stable
Debian 3.1 Sarge, my server does not properly reboot when given any kind of
reboot command through SSH. The system acts normally while going into runlevel
6, but freezes when it reaches the message "Rebooting... System restarting".
Where, usually, I would not even see the "System restarting" message being
appended and the system would cleanly reboot, the system now freezes leaving
the server in a completely unusuable state, only repairable by manually
powercycling the server.
This problem does not occur when the restart command is given from a locally
connected terminal (eg. a keyboard plugged into it), only when it is given over
SSH.
This problem only occurs when using the kernel from the
kernel-image-2.6.8-3-386 package. The kernel from the
kernel-image-2.4.27-3-386 (2.4.27-10sarge5) is also installed and does not have
this problem. I did not observe this problem before the
kernel-image-2.6.8-3-386 package was upgraded today, though I cannot confirm
that it was definely not there before.
I have tried several things to bypass the problem, none were effective:
- Disconnecting the SSH session before the SSH daemon on the server was stopped
by the shutdown process
- Executing the command from a shell given by the "screen" command.
- using different commands to initiate the reboot ("shutdown -r now", "init 6",
etc.)
Effectively, I'm left with no way to reboot my server remotely over SSH.
My SSH services are provied by the (stable) "ssh" package, which is installed
properly through apt-get and at version "1:3.8.1p1-8.sarge.6".
My server is based on a Jetway J7F4K Series motherboard, using a VIA CN700
chipset.
I will be more than happy to assist you in any way I can in fixing this
problem. If you require any further information, please e-mail me at rjhuijsman

Robert-Jan Huijsman.
