I came across this today and it seems to work (for me at least),
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg26808.html
which notes that one can work around this spindown/spinup problem
by simply turning-off that ability in the external USB drive via,
% sdparm --clear STANDBY -6 /dev/sda
I agree though with the noted email's author that its a horrid "hack"
and a proper solution needs to be found (in the kernel maybe ?) to allow
such products to "just work" out-of-the-box.
NOTE: I did not try the other workaround (ie. setting the 'allow_restart')
since it seems kludger and it wasn't clear if it did indeed do what
was intended.
Thoughts/Ideas ?
