i have recently installed the latest distribution of Debian 4.0 with the default kernel version 2.6.18-5. the system worked just fine in the few first hours but then, "suddenly" things went wrong. i couldn't execute any command (like: reboot, uptime, etc.) anymore. it says:
ls: reading directory .: Input/output error bash: /sbin/reboot: Input/output error The output of /var/log/syslog looks like: Sep 22 09:04:36 serv kernel: ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen Sep 22 09:04:36 serv kernel: ata1.00: (BMDMA stat 0x0) Sep 22 09:04:36 serv kernel: ata1.00: tag 0 cmd 0xca Emask 0x4 stat 0x40 err 0x0 (timeout) Sep 22 09:04:38 serv kernel: ata1: soft resetting port Sep 22 09:04:45 serv kernel: ata1.00: configured for UDMA/133 Sep 22 09:04:45 serv kernel: ata1: EH complete Sep 22 09:04:45 serv kernel: SCSI device sda: 488397168 512-byte hdwr sectors (250059 MB) Sep 22 09:04:45 serv kernel: sda: Write Protect is off Sep 22 09:04:45 serv kernel: sda: Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 Sep 22 09:04:45 serv kernel: SCSI device sda: drive cache: write back I even replaced the hard-drive but the problem seems to persist. I got to the conclusion that there might be some problems with the SATA modules in the kernel. I intend to install the latest version of kernel yet available (the 2.6.23). What do you guys advise me to do? Is this kernel (2.6.23) good enough to be used on my system?
