Regarding the message
FATAL: Kernel too old
The user at a rural mountaintop might only have such a one single
rescue disk. Please instead allow minimal operability.
Or at least allow him to hit CTRL ALT DEL to reboot then, instead of
having to resort to POWER OFF, POWER ON, if there is no RESET button
on his laptop.

If you view this as a kernel bug, then the only way we could fix it
is to update the kernel. Luckily we updated to 2.6 long ago, so we're
good.
