Same problem here, on a ibm T42 whit lenny (and also in ubuntu lts)

With the default modules.alias, we have a 3-4 minuttes pause, and then
neither sound nor WiFi works.
Modifing these two lines, the boot proccess doesn't stops, and sound
and wifi works perfectly.
I don't know if that fix the package affecs other machines (Geode,
etc.) but if I can help testing or giving more info, I will be happy to
have these common ibm's well supported for lenny.
