Switching back to the most recent 2.6.24-1-686-bigmem proves, that this issue is somehow related to the 2.6.25-2-686-bigmem kernel. No problems whatsoever with previous kernel versions either. During all test scenarios the system configuration was identical (USB storage devices, I/F to which they were connected to, config-files, etc.), only the kernel has been switched. Please note, that even when I repeatedly copy the same directory onto one and the same device, the write process fails on different files/directories. Access restrictions have been checked and are OK. However, I have decided to switch back to 2.6.24 (currently running) as I use the USB devices for backup purposes.
