I don't know why there is no over-ride mechanism in the kernel or kernel modules, but doesn't blacklisting present an option? For example, I could easily blacklist the piix module, which my system does not require, but that still won't work unless the ata_piix module is compiled intact without the debian patch. Or maybe udev is supposed to be able to handle this? In any event, it seems to me that all solutions ultimate require a fully-functional ata_piix module.
