Unfortunately it looks like i'll have to re-test with a vanilla upstream
kernel before i'm allowed to do that.
Does it work with more recent kernel versions, such as the current
kernel from sid?
I've just tested with the version of 2,6.30 from backports.org and the
networking now behaves.
