Thank you for the insight. I can confirm this: I've searched for an older kernel to try one that predates the introduction of KMS and found linux-image-2.6.26-2-686_2.6.26-21lenny3_i386.deb. I've installed and booted it: xbacklight (and the gnome power manager brightness applet) work again.
