Updating to 2.6.32-4-686 fixed the problem. The device has now been detected and discs are auto-mounted by the Gnome desktop system.
Two notes: When installing the new kernel, aptitude gave 7 instances of the following error: debconf: Unknown template field '_description', in stanzaX of \ /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-2.6.32-4-686.templates It looks as though the '_' was inserted to prevent the actions from being run. The change in the device naming system didn't cause me any problems, but coding in a warning of the change might be warranted. I wouldn't expect any of these to make a change. Please try linux-image-2.6.32-4-686, version 2.6.32-11, which is currently in unstable. This has new drivers for most IDE controllers, which may well fix this problem.
