Please see bug 596635 which this one is now merged with.
In a nutshell smartpoll mode is not reliable (causing random loss of
network connectivity) and is therefore now disabled in debian-kernel's
SVN.
There was a few threads regarding smartpoll's reliability on xen-devel
in the last month or so if you want to research further.
