I wonder if this is simply down to the Lenny kernel having netfront built static and the Squeeze backport kernel has it built as a module.
Perhaps combined with some failure to autoload the module for some reason (bug in module-init-tools, something about the domU filesystem configuration etc). To confirm please add "xen-netfront" to /etc/modules inside the guest.
