Thanks for providing a patch, it has been on my todo list for a while, however I was not able to find time to take care of it so far.
One of the users affected by this problem has confirmed that booting with 'video=atyfb:off' provides a workaround for this issue [0]. It has now been (or should be) documented in release errata [1].
