Sorry, I'm having trouble understanding the exact nature of the
problem.  So, quick recap:

You are using the rtl8192u driver from staging, if I understand correctly.
There was a regression in v2.6.39-rc1 that has been fixed in v3.0.3 (so the
fix will probably be in the next upload to squeeze) and probably is not
relevant here.

You are able to list networks ("ip link set wlan1 up && iw dev wlan1 scan")
but for some reason are not able to connect to one ("iw dev wlan1 connect
SMCnetfree").  No message appears in dmesg when you try.

Do I understand correctly?  If so, please test a recent kernel (ideally
v3.1-rc2 or later from upstream[1]), get an iw event log[2], and
describe the symptoms to [email protected], cc-ing Larry
Finger <[email protected]> and [email protected].
