I'd suggest testing using alsamixer from the alsa-utils package, since
that's under the umbrella of the ALSA project.

If the GNOME 2 mixer is no longer able to control automute for Realtek
codecs (and the same version of the mixer worked with earlier
kernels), that's a regression, and the kind folks at
[email protected] should learn about it regardless of how
GNOME 3's behaves.  So please report your results to the alsa team
(cc-ing Takashi Iwai and this bug log).
