I've also been getting this problem on my machine possibly a little less
frequently with 3.x kernels, I'm currently using the following kernel

Linux debian 3.1.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Nov 29 13:47:12 UTC 2011 x86_64
GNU/Linux

network card:

05:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5416 Wireless
Network Adapter [AR5008 802.11(a)bgn] (rev 01)

dmesg snippet:

[174679.683503] ath: Unable to reset channel (2442 MHz), reset status -5
[174679.683541] ath: Unable to set channel
[174679.799448] ath: Could not kill baseband RX
[174679.916386] ath: Unable to reset channel (2447 MHz), reset status -5

modprobe/modprobe -r ath9k solves my problems. Having my net
connection die randomly is getting really annoying. I am willing to
collect more info if required.
