Yuck. Marking as a duplicate of fdo bug 40455. We can undo that later if a fix for 40455 doesn't help. :) Thanks for investigating. A good next step would be to try 3.2-rc6 or newer from experimental, since there have been some backlight fixes upstream recently. Though I'm not too optimistic yet.
