The script being run above is not from the kernel packaging --- it is a
hook script provided by another package.

I'm not sure how to interpret that.  extlinux is both not installed
and installed?  I suppose output from "egrep linux /var/log/dpkg.log"
would help disambiguate.

Perhaps in the same dpkg run extlinux was being upgraded and
/etc/kernel/postinst.d/zz-extlinux wasn't upgraded yet, or something.
Can you still reproduce this?
