Thanks, this is very helpful.

Symptoms look similar to [2].  Richard, did you ever end up solving
that?

Harry, could you try a 3.x.y kernel from sid or wheezy?  The only
packages you should need from outside squeeze in order to do so are
the kernel image itself, linux-base, and initramfs-tools.
