Thanks, Ben.  I did a clean install of squeeze (6.0.3) with the 2.6.32-5-amd64 
kernel and verified that the problem still exists.  I then followed your 
instructions and tested with the 3.2.0-1-amd64 kernel from sid, and this 
behavior appears to be fixed.
