I tested this by booting off a couple of live cds of debian 5.09 (it must have 
worked back then) and 6.03. The live cds work on another computer, but didn't 
get much beyond the boot menu here. A newer kernel (3.2) was also no help.

It now seems most likely that the drive itself is broken (and that I have lots 
of broken drives). If a new drive works I won't be chasing this further. Sorry 
for the noise.
