Possible reasons for the change (irrespective of vbox or nvidia): 1. I made a mistake testing it (always possible). 2. Some other process had busied the device, i.e. some game on another login. 3. There have been two upgrades of the 3.2 kernel recently.
I need to recheck but is is reasonable to expect that the on-board intel audio will still be inoperative from a browser. It is this interface that has been generating complaints with these kernels.
