Well, I finally decided to make another effort on this wifi problem. Re-installed the card and then got the back-ported kernel installed again. Booted into "recovery mode" and there is no wlan0 at all. The card is no longer recognized, so I guess I did something wrong and killed it. Even restarting into the standard kernel it is not recognized. :( This is
unfortunate because it was a better card than the one I am using. But I don't see any reason to hunt down another copy of a card that doesn't work with the current OS on the system, so I guess there is nothing more I can do with this problem. When I put the other card back into the system, it does still work, so it's not the motherboard/card socket that got fried, it's the original card.
