Is this the same machine as bug#676704? (If so, I prefer to track all symptoms in one place.) Do the "VM: trapped read" errors happen in 3.0.y only? That kernel is not maintained in Debian --- supported versions are 2.6.32.y, 3.2.y, and 3.4.y at the moment.
