In generally at least I prefer to work with mainline (3.9-rcn) and
stable (3.2.y) kernels instead of the out-of-tree driver backports.

Sorry I dropped the ball after a while on the brcmsmac quest
(bug#664767).  I believe Arend made a candidate bugfix (cc-ing you and
me to notify us) that was merged in 3.8-rc7.  Have you tried 3.8.2
from experimental?
