The kernel works just fine (or at least you haven't described in what
way it "does not work").  It just has a different configuration, in
particular i915 kms is disabled by default in squeeze, so needs to be
explicitly enabled (on the command line or modprobe configuration).
xserver-xorg-video-intel deos that, but since you don't have it
installed...
