Yesterday I triggered the same issue on another machine. Same steps to reproduce: loopback mounting, rsync'ing. This time I had 3 images mounted and while unmounting the 2nd image the system froze completely. I could no longer type any command, login, or do anything, so even worse than the first report.
This system had the /data partition (where the .img files resided on that were used for loopback mounting) mounted through NFS. So no DRBD or RAID involved here.
