Have you looked in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/?
Assuming you have the linux kernel source in /usr/src/linux.
A lot of people post questions here about sound card configuration.
IMHO, the kernel docs have plenty info, and they're not too complicated.
Most of the howtos I see are just rewrites of the kernel docs anyway.
