Or for pre-dpkg'd window managers, "apt-cache search x-window-manager". Each WM is supposed to provide the x-window-manager virtual package, which is what causes this to work. Just ignore the x-window-system-core package. The reason it's there is because it mentions x-window-manager in its description. Then, if you see a package that looks interesting, "apt-cache show <package-name>" to get a longer description. Of course, checking freshmeat.net as Heather suggested is good too, because you can find more window managers, and you can usually find the wm's web page, where they have screenshots and talk about the purpose for the wm. >> Supercool - where can I see some info and screenshots for each? [Heather's reply snipped] As a word of warning, a lot of the popular wm's like E and sawfish can be made to look a lot like each other, so comparing screenshots may not be particularly useful. Usually the differences that are most important are memory usage (especially important for laptop owners), speed, and configurability. For memory usage and speed, blackbox is supposedly good (I'm surprised no one has recommended it yet), but I think the look of it is pretty limited. That's usually OK, though, because its default look is pretty slick. twm and fvwm are among the least resource-intensive wm's, but are harder to configure, and you have less options (in terms of looks, you can change the colours and fonts, but that's about it). E is quite configurable, and comes with a config program, but is quite resource intensive. sawfish seems to be about right for me, but YMMV. - -- Hubert Chan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> - http://www.geocities.com/hubertchan/ PGP/GnuPG key: 1024D/71FDA37F Fingerprint: 6CC5 822D 2E55 494C 81DD 6F2C 6518 54DF 71FD A37F Key available at wwwkeys.pgp.net.
