I have installed GNU/Linux on a Toshiba Libretto, also 800 MB HD, but I preferd to install this HD into an PC. Another idea would be to link your Laptop with an other PC with a nullmodem cable (serial) or a laplink cable (parallel). I havn't experiances with this, but a link for you: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/PLIP-Install-HOWTO.html These cables are cheap to make yourself. And this link is not only interesting for installation, you can run TCP/IP for an local net, for backups, printer sharing, internet ...
