Hello, I've installed debian testing on a Dell I500m with an Intel 855GM graphics chipset. So far I'm having trouble getting X to work with the drivers available at the Intel website:
Intel(R) Extreme Graphics - Linux* [I830-20030120-I386-LINUX.TAR.GZ]
The i830 and agpgart modules compile but fail to load on installation.
The last lines of the dmesg output: agpgart: Detected an Intel(R) 855GM Chipset agpgart: unable to get memory for scratch page
Starting x gives me: Skipping "/usr/X11R/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a:debug_xform.o": No symbols found Skipping "/usr/X11R/lib/modules/fonts/libspeedo.a:spencode.o": No symbols found (WW): I801: No matching Device section for instance(BusID PCI:0:2:1) found (EE) GARTInit: Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such device) (EE) I801(0) No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth (EE) Screens(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
I'm using a 2.4.20 kernel + XFree86 4.2
Are you sure that your using the agpgart module that came in the Intel package? Also, you need to make sure you install it's built with the kernel you'll be running. Here's the relevant kernel messages from my laptop:
Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann agpgart: Tungsten Graphics version 20021029 agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 313M agpgart: Detected an Intel(R) 830M Chipset. agpgart: PGTBL_CTL value is 0x17fe0000 agpgart: detected 8060K stolen memory. agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0x98000000 [drm] AGP 0.99 on Intel i810 @ 0x98000000 128MB [drm] Initialized i830 1.3.2 20021108 on minor 0
