I also get this problem. Are you running sid (unstable)?
Does your XF86 detect the memory of your Rage Mobility correctly?
I had a similar problem with a Rage Mobility LY6 (ThinkPad X22)
at woody. If it's detecting a wrong memory size you can put it in XF86config-4.
In the sid packages the misbehavior is gone.

I have sid but it still seems to have this problem.
