I just researched whether hostap can run with 802.11g. I came to the 
tentative conclusion that it is not yet supported :

I would like to know if anyone has better info than this.

I consulted Prism54.org, but that did not seem to help me a lot, or I 
just don't follow everything ...
Some stuff I tried :
apt-get installed the following :
linux-wlan-ng-modules-2.4.22-1.586tsc
linux-wlan-ng
hostap-modules-2.4.22-1-586tsc
hotplug
