Oh I could install it OK, but Ross' suggestion was that the presence of discover on the system might be *the source* of the problem I described (an un-wanted attempt at boot-time to always bring up the eth0 network interface) ... so I hardly want to.
I've since tried putting:
install eth0 /bin/true
in /etc/modprobe.conf, but that didn't solve the problem either,
