I am not sure, but perhaps you are using initrd and you forgot to use the mkinitrd command when you compiled your new kernel? I hope I am not insulting your intelligence with my reply, but I don't know if you are new to compiling Debian kernels. Take a look at etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst if that is appropriate for your system. That should tell you if your previous kernel was using initrd.
