The whole system is unresponsive, doesn't respond to any keyboard commands.

Have you tried to log in to your laptop using SSH when this problem happens ?

I have the same issue with an other Toshiba laptop (Satellite Pro 4600) : when I log out of X, sometimes the screen becomes blank and seems to be unresponsive.
But anyway I can shutdown my computer properly : I just type "ctrl-alt-f1", then "root", then my root password, then "halt".
I don't see what I'm typing because the screen is still blank but I can hear the "beep" meaning that the system is shutting down (and he does).
I also can shutdown the computer using SSH.
