I had a similar problem with installing linux generally. That is, even Red Hat couldn't deal with pcmcia. (This is on a travelmate 342-T) So, I used the Debian 2.1 (rel.2) binary to install and then to remove the pcmcia software completely. My ethernet card works quite well. I am now learning to deal with the winmodem.
