I just bought an old crappy laptop with no CD-ROM and installed the Debian base image using floppies - when I did the install I was both unsure of the modem's setup, and not near a phone line, so I skipped the initial install. However I noted that it stated that to connec to my provider to simply type "pon". Is pon supposed to actually give me some type of feedback when I run it?
