Hi,
My problem with apm that if I use standby the system halts and I need
to switch off and start again. Suspend seems to work. I hoped the ACPI
would solve this. But I only found the pmtools from the web:
http://phobos.fs.tum.de/acpi
and it's not clear how to use them.
There's a command pmtest to test power management...
I'm using the Linux 2.4.3 kernel which can mount Win ME partitions
and the maestro3 module is working with the sound chip (Maestro 3i).

There's another issue with XFree86 4.0.2. Sometimes it just halts.

As far as I know ACPI or APM is an issue for the motherboard and BIOS,
rather than strictly depending on the main processor itself.
Anyway, I've been unimpressed enough with ACPI to not bother worrying
about
it for the time being. I have both ACPI and APM compiled in, but APM
gets
preference, contrary to the documentation. ACPI can't determine battery
levels yet. And worst of all, I couldn't get the suspend function to
work
with ACPI.
In short, I found ACPI basically useless. But, it's under development,
so
maybe it'll come good sooner or later. And it's usefulness no doubt
varies
from one system to another.
