You can happily point your system at standard Debian mirrors and do a 'apt-get update' 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to use more recent Debian packages. You will most likely want the 'unstable' branch of Debian in that case. Find the nearest mirror at http://www.debian.org/distrib/ftplist and a good look around the Debian site will help you out in configuring your system to use the Debian mirrors - basically adding a couple of new lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list .
