I also have a Gericom laptop with the integrated SiS630 chipset. It works fine with the sis-driver and XFree-4.0.1. I didn't try 4.0.3 bu I tried 4.1.0 and it didn't work.
The real sis driver seems to be a bit faster than the fbdev-driver but there's no Xv extension avaiable. Have a look at the webpage of SiS. The conditions for having it working is that you use [EMAIL PROTECTED] (vga=791 in lilo.conf) and X server also @1024x768x16bits.
