Wow! This is the first mailing list where I've gotten so many responses back to a small problem. I have solved the problem with the assistance of all of you and the machine is running great now. There was a mistake in my custom kernel configuration that I found; furthermore, there was a setting in the BIOS that I believe was causing the touchpad not to activate.
