As said right above, you need to have a framebuffer-enabled console to see the penguin(s)[1] (see "Console Drivers > Frame-buffer support" in the kernel configuration menu; you have to answer Y to "developement and/or incomplete code" to be able to enable it). [1] Actually, you can see more than one penguin[2], since the number of penguins is supposed to be equal to the number of CPUs your system has.
