Well, According to 4.1.0 release documentation ( http://www.xfree.org/4.1.0/Status6.html#6 ): Accelerated support is provided for Mach64, Rage, Rage 128 and Radeon chips. Btw, as I said in my previous message, I took the second route, upgraded to 4.2.1 using apt-get, but as I said, this didn't improve things.
