Hi all, I've got a Dell Inspiron 7500 running an up-to-date Debian-testing system. I can't get the modem function of my Xircom Cardbus RBEM56G 10/100+Modem 56 PCMCIA card working. Network has always worked, but I've never seen any evidence that the modem is working, based on three things:
1) running "#cardctl ident" returns Socket 0: product info: "Xircom", "CardBus Ethernet 10/100 + Modem 56", "CBEM56G", "1.03" manfid: 0x0105, 0x0103 function: 6 (network) Socket 1: no product info available i.e. no mention of any modem. Also interesting that the card is not quite correctly recognised (being the RBEM56G, not the CBEM56G). Is this relevant? 2) wvdial cannot autodetect any modems on my system 3) minicom does not give me the standard: "at<RET>OK" response I'm expecting (though I'm not sure which serial device I should be using). However, I know the modem is okay because I am occasionally forced to boot into Windows (this is a dual boot system) and it works fine there. This problem has existed with kernels 2.2.17 through to (currently) 2.4.20 (from the linux kernel archives - not the Debian version). I've installed the pcmcia modules (recompiled using kernel-package) and pcmcia-cs package, but lsmod says no modules are running - I'm guessing they're all in the kernel now. An exerpt from my syslog upon card insertion is as follows: Jan 23 21:55:26 a kernel: cs: cb_alloc(bus 2): vendor 0x115d, device 0x0003 Jan 23 21:55:26 a kernel: PCI: Enabling device 02:00.0 (0000 -> 0003) Jan 23 21:55:26 a kernel: PCI: Setting latency timer of device 02:00.0 to 64 Jan 23 21:55:26 a kernel: eth0: Xircom cardbus revision 3 at irq 11 Jan 23 21:55:26 a kernel: PCI: Enabling device 02:00.1 (0000 -> 0003) Jan 23 21:55:26 a /etc/hotplug/net.agent: invoke ifup eth0 Jan 23 21:55:26 a kernel: ttyS04 at port 0x4080 (irq = 11) is a 16550A Jan 23 21:55:26 a kernel: xircom cardbus adaptor found, registering as eth0, using irq 11 Jan 23 21:55:26 a cardmgr[249]: socket 0: CardBus hotplug device Jan 23 21:55:26 a /etc/hotplug/pci.agent: ... no modules for PCI slot 02:00.0 Jan 23 21:55:26 a /etc/hotplug/pci.agent: ... no modules for PCI slot 02:00.1 Jan 23 21:55:27 a kernel: xircom_cb: Link status has changed Jan 23 21:55:27 a kernel: xircom_cb: Link is 100 mbit This makes it look like everything's going okay, so I'm a little confused why it doesn't show up for any other programs. I can provide other information, but am not currently sure what's relevant. What am I missing? (Incidentally, is ttyS04 is the same as ttyS4?) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
