Well, i didn't have it on the two first ones I had I think? Was rather long ago. (On them you had to turn off the Level 2 cache to make the stock debian install disks boot, but that is another story...) But both the Portege 7020 and the Tecra T9000 had the keyboard problem on the console also. > > Sure, the problem is fixable, but my gripe with it is that if I > > were paying out of my own pocket for a laptop, I would choose a > > product that I didn't need to hack to get basic functionality, > > yeah. i understand. > > i'm not religious - just satisfied with my little moby. > NP, I like my T9000 well enough. Especially the builtin wavelan card. That some hardware, like the ordinary network card and the gfx card, didn't have support straight off in woody was also solvable. (Intel had a network driver for download when I started, and now there is support for the card in the latest 2.4 kernels, and the vesa fb works so well that I haven't investigated if it is worth it to find a XFree86 build that supports the gfx chip.) And given a choice of laptops to choose from I've choosen Toshiba many times, especiall over Compaq or similar "dull" stuff. And while I'm to much of a debian fascist to actually consider buying a laptop with with dead rat or similar preloaded it would be nice if it the only hassle getting "linux" to run on a new boxen was the usual package system and installer ones. Linux for the masses, if one supports that concept, is not going to happen until the hardware vendors release drivers or patches for their "new and improved" hw for linux as well, or use "standard" components so there is no need. Sure "we" can write the drivers ourselfes, and patch broken hw behavior, but the drivers are always going to lag 6-12 months, and not all people can or want to hunt for fixes to make hw behave as expected. That said, i've seriosly been considering buying a Crusoe based laptop out of my own pocket money, and I have no clue whatsoever how well it runs debian. I just very badly crave one... ;-) > yours, niels > > ps: as an information: your mail's header lacks ml-specific entries > like list-post and so on. i nearly replied to you off list. Thanks, have to look at it..
