Here we go again... still unresolved. On my Sharp Actius PCA-290, I have serious troubles with the keyboard. During install, post install in text mode, and post install in gfx mode in the console under gdm and kdm.
It goes like this: I boot from bf-2.4 floppies, because that´s the only way to get the install to access my PCMCIA CD-Rom (as /hde). I chose a qwerty/us layout in the beginning and proceed through my installation. Already here, the first problems appear. Tab will cause [[P to display in the lines where you can enter text, sometimes Enter will do the same. Later, when entering the passwords, it´s hopeless, it took me about thirty tries until I got the passwords to match in the install phase (for root and user). Then, post install, when configurin the system and the xserver, I chose a us layout and 101 keyboard, also a 104 for testing, but both don´t resolve the issue. The 101 works mighty better than the 104 though. Is there any other type of keyboard that might work? It´s a pretty standard laptop keyboard with no fancy extra buttons at all. Starting debian in text mode lets me enter the users without problems, only sometimes, root will come out as r[!oot, but when I try to enter passwords longer than one character, it just won´t authenticate them. I have shadow MD5 activated, but checking the passwords in the graphical login confirms, that they are correctly entered. Speaking of gfx login, from here on it works quite fine, the keyboard. Only when I go into a shell, does the problem return, especially with Capital letters. That come out either R[[! or R!caret etc. It´s really annoying and I can´t find a way to fix it. For my touchpad I have selected Psaux. That works fine. I have no three button emulation on, no scroll events either. Should I use something different here? As for the display, it´s driven by a Trident Cyber 9525, which according to X doocs is supported, but the installer always wants to drive it either 1 bit or 24 bit. And I might be mistaken, but as far as my docs go, this display should run 16 bit. I will try to edit xconfig to see if that changes anything... I suppose though, that afterwards I will have to delete all other modes, to force it to go into this mode, for I haven´t found any way to change resolutions after having logged in. any help? I appreciate if anyone can help out with this. None of the above problems occur when installing a lesser OS (yes, WinSuck, but only to test that the hardware works fine...). Regards, H.
