Not really a solution, just share some of my experience.
I have an Inspiron 4150 with the exact same problem. Turning off the
screen will cause X crash. Some time back, I read some where that it is
a video card (ATI) driver problem, and newer version of xfree86 will
solve the problem. That version is not even released yet, and can only
download from some xfree86 guy's nightly built website. I was too lazy
to do that. Instead, I disable screen auto turn-off feature in BIOS :)
