I am a newbie to debian, but have been running linux for several years. I
have just installed sid on my vaio r505 and cannot get alsa to work. I
upgraded the kernel to 2.6.4 per the instructions in Debian Reference
chapter 7 with help from

http://www.geocities.com/torus2000/linux_on_PCG-R505GL.html

(I barely modified his .config). Here is output from various commands:

laptop:/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.4# grep SOUND .config | grep -v ^#
CONFIG_SOUND_GAMEPORT=y
CONFIG_SOUND=y
laptop:/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.4# grep SND .config | grep -v ^#
CONFIG_SND=y
CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y
CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=y
CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=y
CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0=y

I have installed alsa-base, alsa-utils, and alsa-source. Alsa is running.

laptop:/usr/src/kernel-source-2.6.4# lsmod
