Just to complete it here, one can use secure shell:
in some xterm do

ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]        or
ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then start your favourite X application without specifying the display, i.e.

acroread

ssh will automatically forward the X application to your display, and you do 
not have to rely on the (possibly) limited security features of X11. The 
network connection is encrypted (as ssh does), so you can do this across 
untrusted nets.
